Case Elo: Strengthening Strategic Capabilities
What turns strategy into real impact? Strategic capabilities – the unique mix of competences, structures, systems, processes, and data that help an organisation succeed and renew itself. In this case story, we share how we partnered with Elo to strengthen these capabilities through a tailored development programme.
Elo Mutual Pension Insurance Company is a leading Finnish pension insurance provider. Elo manages the pension provision for over 500,000 employees and self-employed persons and pays pensions to approximately 250,000 pensioners. The company oversees investment assets totalling around EUR 30 billion.
The programme was designed and launched in Autumn 2024.

The challenge
Elo recognised the need to identify and define strategic capabilities to crystallise its competitive advantage and ensure effective strategy execution. The objective was to create a holistic and systematic process for capability development, aligning strategy with capability, competence, and leadership development.
The Henley Solution
Henley Business School provided consultative and facilitative support to identify and develop strategic capabilities. The programme was delivered by Dr. Paula Kilpinen, Managing Director of Henley Business School Nordic and a recognised expert in strategic capabilities. Dr. Kilpinen holds an award-winning doctoral degree in International Business, focusing on the development of strategic capabilities in rapidly changing global environments.
Programme Content
The programme was carried out using both facilitative and consultative methods, ensuring that strategic capabilities were identified and developed in a systemic and systematic manner, closely integrated with strategy development and implementation.
Key Components:
- Diagnostic & Orientation: Pre-read materials and interviews to set the stage.
- Workshops: Facilitated sessions with leadership teams and small groups to identify and define strategic capabilities.

The Impact
- Clarity of the company's competitive advantage and its ability to create value.
- Identification of critical capabilities for strategy implementation.
- Proactive development of future capabilities.
- Enhanced role of ecosystems and partnerships.
- Alignment of people and culture processes (leadership, competence, talent development) with strategy.
Collaboration with Henley Business School was smooth and efficient. Strategic capabilities in this form were a new approach to strategy for us, but Henley's process was quite effective, and we achieved results with a relatively small time investment.
